Coach 103
Coach 103 was built of
wood in 1908 by the Pullman Company of Chicago, Illinois for the
Keweenaw Central Railway of Calumet, Michigan. The Keweenaw Central
ceased operations a few years later and this coach was purchased by the
Winnipeg Light and Power Co. in 1920 (later named Winnipeg Hydro).
It is owned by Manitoba Hydro
and is
leased to the Society for use with the Prairie Dog Central on a
long-term lease, along with steam locomotive No. 3.
It is a "Combination Coach" which means it has an area intended for
baggage (approximately 1/3 of the coach length) and the remainder is
equipped with passenger seats. The wall dividing the coach has a doorway
to permit passage between the two areas. The baggage area is used for
the train crew, and to accommodate special equipment required during
operations such as an electric generator, kerosene lanterns, first aid
equipment, radio and public address communications equipment and so
forth.
It has been completely restored to its original condition featuring oak
paneling, opaque vent windows, pot bellied stove and lavatory. A coach
of this type was often used in mixed trains along with boxcars serving
the freight and transportation needs of prairie villages. Coach 103 has
a maximum seating capacity of 36 passengers.
Coach 103 was been renamed "Gordon Younger" in honour of one of the
Society’s founding members.
